Michael Marsh recently left a 5 year term on the board of @MontanaStateFund, the $1.8 B non-profit mutual insurance company. MSF competes in the agency/producer market for workers’ compensation insurance business against the biggest names, most well-funded insurance companies in the world.
Among the accomplishments that he sourced or was involved in from 2021 through 2026 include:
· Substantive revision of the process for calculating and awarding policyholder dividends annually
· Base WC rate reductions of 34%
· Policyholder dividends returned to Montana businesses of $246.5 million
· Identification of > $100 million in claim reserve redundancies for older policy years
· Finalization of the $40m+ Policy / Billing system and beginning the process of a more accountable, on time and within budget conversion of the Claims system (currently in process) to the cloud
· Improvement in the Executive and staff salary and benefit levels vs. competitive employers in the workers’ compensation insurance and claims industries, and
· Replacement of the top 6 Executive positions of the company
At the September, 2026 board meeting, Mr. Marsh was presented with a document that, in his words, “was more meaningful to me than almost anything that has happened to me in my 52 years in the industry.” MSF and Kids’ Chance of Montana collaborated to create a named KCMT scholarship in his name. The certificate was provided by Holly O’Dell, CEO of Montana State Fund and Leah Tietz, former President of Kids’ Chance of Montana.
“It is such an honor to receive this, not only has my company helped over 35,000 workers recover and get their lives back after a workers’ compensation injury, my name will go on to help students in the future whose parent is injured or killed at work”, said Marsh after the ceremony, “Thank you to everyone that has been on my teams along the way allowing us together to live the life of ‘Humanizing Workers’ Compensation Claims’.”
Midland Claims has been an NAIIA member since the early 1970s and Michael Marsh is currently serving as the NAIIA President. Congratulations to Michael for all his accomplishments!
